Yes, animation is where it’s AT.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: animation isn’t just for kids, cartoons, or Pixar-level productions. In the digital world we live and work in, animation is having a moment, and it’s not going ANYWHERE.

Animation, is it marketing’s IT girl?

Think about it. Is there anything that you can’t use animation for?

Need a piece of software explained in 60 seconds? Animation. Need to train your team on something? Animation. Want to stop doom scrollers in their tracks with something that effortlessly combines information, creativity and VO? ANIMATION BISH.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a well put-together animation brings a brand to life in a way that static visuals just can’t touch. And 83% of digital marketers agree, stating that animated content helps them generate more leads (KrishaStudio, 2020).

In essence, animation is no longer a “nice to have.” It’s essential.

Tired of reading about it?

Say less, we’ve got you. In our latest episode of Nuts About Design, Pistachio’s resident animation expert Chris joins host Marie to talk through the tools, techniques and inspiration behind what makes a good animation great.  Pretty cool, huh? (Dw, we know we are).

Take a listen, here.

Why animation, and why now?

Let’s be real: attention spans are tanking. Like BIG time. The internet is loud AF. And unfortunately, most of us are slaves to the screen, whether it’s the one we stare at all day while we work, the one we sit in front of to wind down, or the small one we’re glued to while keeping an eye on both of the aforementioned screens. It’s exhausting.

So, it’s no wonder then that brands are struggling to compete in a world where 3 seconds can make or break engagement. That’s where animation can help. It grabs attention, keeps people watching, and tells a story faster and better than static imagery ever could – and without the need to shove an unwilling team member, or overpaid influencer, in front of a camera.

Add to that the rise of explainer videos, app demos, motion branding, and even animated case studies, and it’s crystal clear: if your shiz isn’t moving, you’re missing a trick.

What makes a good animation (and a good animator?)

Good animation doesn’t just look slick, it solves problems. It explains the complex and it visualises the invisible. It tells your story in a way that feels effortless, even if it isn’t.

And good animators? They’re a special breed. Equal parts technician, storyteller, and slightly obsessive detail gremlin. For Chris, it’s about instinct, timing, rhythm – and knowing when to let things breathe.

In short, a good animator understands:

  • The brief (obviously – more on briefs here.)
  • The audience
  • The platform
  • And the power of less when done really well

From scribble to screen: the process

One of the things people often underestimate is how much actually goes into making an animation. It’s not just: get an idea, fire up After Effects, hit render. There’s concepting, storyboarding, scripting, voiceover, design, timing, edits, sound, and usually about 93 rounds of tiny changes that no one but the animator will notice (and still fixes anyway).

Tools of the trade?

  • A good copywriter
  • After Effects
  • Illustrator
  • Cinema 4D
  • A big playlist and stronger coffee

Final thoughts? You’re welcome!

In a noisy, fast-scrolling world, animation gives your brand an edge, and one that keeps on growing. It brings life, clarity, energy, and emotion.

So, if you’re still sitting on a static homepage header or trying to explain a game-changing idea with nothing but bullet points and vibes…maybe it’s time to switch things up.
