Building your brand identity pyramid – from the ground up
Let’s talk about building a brand. It’s a bit like building a house, right? You start with a solid foundation, add some structure, throw in some personality, and voila — you’ve got a brand.
But here’s the thing: brand-building isn’t just about slapping on a logo (or a cheap red baseball cap) and calling it a day (no, that only works for the disillusioned over in the US of A, apparently).
Enter the brand identity pyramid
What is it? Well, it’s a pretty nifty concept that helps you understand what makes up a solid brand identity. It’s like getting the secret key to a really fancy hotel where all the cool kids hang out and everything is comfortable, enjoyable and stress-free. AMAZING, right?
Disclaimer, unfortunately, we cannot yet provide a political identity pyramid to help save society. Sorry about that. But hey, helping you build a successful and resilient brand is the best we can do for now.
Sound good? We thought so.
So, what is the brand identity pyramid?
Just like the pyramids in Egypt (but, you know, not built by slaves), the brand identity pyramid is all about layering things from bottom to top. Each level builds on the one before it. And much like a pyramid, your brand’s identity needs a solid foundation.
That means, starting with the basics, putting in the grunt work, and keeping faith that when you get to the top – the view will be pretty darn good.
Let’s break it down.
The foundation: mission, vision, and positioning
Mission: Think of your mission as your brand’s “why.” Why do you exist? What do you stand for? If you don’t know this, you could find yourself defending the use of a ‘Roman salute’ around the office water cooler (spoiler alert, nobody believes you, honey). Your mission is the bedrock of your brand. So, if you’re not sure what it is, we strongly suggest you get that nailed down if you want the rest to work out.
Vision: Your vision is your “future self.” Where do you want your brand to go? What’s your dream destination? You wouldn’t start a road trip without a route planned out (well, some people might, but they are very much the people who have no intention of building a brand). Your vision is your North Star — it’s what keeps you heading in the right direction, so map it out, and follow it.
Positioning: This is where you carve out your little corner of the world. It’s about how you differentiate yourself from competitors. If you don’t stand out, you’re just another face in the crowd. Find your sweet spot and own it. But remember, to stand out and succeed, you don’t need to divide and conquer. Any brand that actively sets out to exclude or alienate audiences probably needs to revisit its why – and then take a long hard look in the mirror.
The middle ground: brand values and personality
Brand values: Next up, we’re talking about your brand’s principles. What are the things your brand believes in? What’s the heart and soul of your brand? Do you care about sustainability? Innovation? Free coffee for your team (hey, can we get some of that too)? These values give your brand depth and meaning. But don’t just throw any old fluff out there, make sure your values truly represent who you are and what you stand for.
Brand personality: Just like people, brands have personalities. Are you the fun, mysterious drunk Aunt who’s always making inappropriate jokes? Or are you more of the traditional trad wife with a penchant for making cereal from scratch at 4am? No shade on either; they both have their benefits (If you hate sleep I suppose) but your personality should be evident in how you talk, how you look, and how your brand interacts with people across every platform.
The top tier: message & visuals
Brand message: At the top of the pyramid, we have the “what you say” part. This is the messaging that’s consistently shared across all your platforms, whether it’s on your website, social media, or on the back of a business card. Your message should reflect all of it: your mission, vision, and values while also speaking to your audience’s needs and desires. If your messaging doesn’t resonate with them, then, well… that’s a problem (and those red caps will be coming to steal them from you).
Visual identity (colours & fonts): And now we get to the fun part: the look of your brand. This is where your logo, colours, fonts, and overall design come into play (can we tell you a secret? It’s our favourite part). It’s how your brand shows up and shows out in the world. Remember, if your visual identity doesn’t match your brand’s personality and message, you might as well be showing up to a black-tie event in your old Spiderman pyjamas. So, make it count.
How Pistachio uses the brand identity pyramid
Here’s the deal: when we work on a branding project (whether it’s for ourselves or a client), we literally use the Brand Identity Pyramid as our roadmap. Yes, really. How else do you think we smashed our award-winning (TBC) rebrand? Check it out here.
We start at the bottom and work our way up to ensure that every layer is strong, cohesive, and aligned with the others. It’s a pretty straightforward recipe for success – but you have to stay on course for it to work. Whether we’re helping a new brand find its footing or rebranding an established company to look sharper, the pyramid guides everything we do.
What does this mean for your brand?
If you’re looking at your brand right now and thinking, “Huh, I’m not sure where my values or mission fit in,” it’s probably time to revisit your pyramid.
Building your brand isn’t just about designing a cool logo or picking trendy fonts. It’s about ensuring that every aspect of your brand — your mission, your personality, your message—aligns with your audience’s expectations and needs. And here’s the thing: your brand also needs longevity. Branding doesn’t end after a flashy launch or catching people’s eye for a moment. A great brand stands the test of time, growing with its audience, staying true to its core values, and adapting as the market evolves.
Sorry to harp on about those big ol’ Pyramids again, but there’s a reason why they still inspire awe and wonder thousands of years later– every layer is built to last. Similarly, by applying the Brand Identity Pyramid to your business, you’ll be able to create a brand that’s not just a fleeting trend but a solid, strategic identity that’s in it for the long haul. And if that sounds like a lot of work, don’t worry — we’re here to help with that.
