pistachio, Tech, Workplace
I hear about ageism in the workplace and it’s often discussed on news programmes, but I can honestly say it’s not something I’ve experienced or my family and friends have had to endure.
Pistachio is a young vibrant strategic creative agency and I was lucky enough to be employed by them last year – without any reservations on their part about my age (I’m in my 50s). I have many years’ experience in this sector, although it is all very different from when I first started working in an agency back in the 1980s – paste-up board, bromides, typesetting etc. and of course the very long lunches…
I’m not afraid to admit that it’s sometimes difficult to grasp the new technology, but I’m so glad I’m not being left behind as this fast-moving industry changes. My colleagues are happy to help and I really don’t mind that they call me ‘Granny Jo’ because that’s who I am (I have one gorgeous grandson).
Another amazing example is my husband who has just been employed by British Airways as Cabin Crew – at the age of 59! And he isn’t the oldest!
Ultimately, we are all living longer and we have a wealth of experience to give. Being in your 50s and 60s, even 70s, isn’t old now and we certainly don’t feel it. It’s good to know that there are companies out there who do want to tap into this bank of knowledge and experience.
So, don’t hold back, go for it, as you have nothing to lose and plenty to gain.
